Earlier this year televangelist Jim Bakker echoed the sentiment of many conservative Christians by claiming that Christians would begin a civil war if Trump was impeached.
You will have a spasm of violence in this country, an insurrection like you’ve never seen. The people will not stand for impeachment. A politician that votes for it will endanger their own life.
I will make this clear: I’m not advocating violence, but I’m predicting it.
It isn’t just Bakker preaching it either nor does this come as any surprise.
This has been their end game, their rapture, their prophesied day of judgement ; they yearn to be swept up in this divine maelstrom and be rewarded in eternity by their god with concerts of Elvis or Jimi Hendrix. This is nothing new, this insane battle has waged for over 2000 years.
Humanity has already abandoned the elder gods of rain and wind and moon for the simple reason that our common experience found that we didn’t require faith for an explanation of their power or their place in the universe. We found that superstition and dogma were tools of the enslavers who only used it to enrich themselves. Now only the one god remains and it’s followers know they stand on shifting ground of their own shallow beliefs.
But yet again, this self persecuted congregation arises to place their superstitions before our common interest in a vain attempt to force their myth on the rest of us. They center themselves not with what real experience shows us but with what metaphorical experience tells them. They do it out of fear of the unfamiliar and hide behind beliefs so fragile a man kissing another causes these consistently violent responses. It chases away the darkness by replacing it with it’s own unquestionable truth under threat of crusade or jihad.
This literal existential threat to our species is why Secular Sunday exists. This religious fervor which echoes through history has always tried to beat down the future by living in the past where it rules supreme.
These voices will never change for they cannot. This war like behavior over what only “the holy” can understand is endemic to this last remaining vestige of our animal ignorance. It is throwing rocks at the thunderstorm to try and make it go away or sacrificing a virgin to appease the angry lord of the volcano.
It is why the last god of humanity must be laid to rest once and for all.
